On the North coast is the old fortified capital of Kastro, accessable by boat and with difficulty by road and track. The islanders were settled here to protect themselves from the invading Turkish, building houses and churches. In 1829 the people moved to the new Skiathos town we are now familiar with. During the 2nd world war Kastro provided shelter for the Allied forces on their way to Egypt. Of the original 30 churches only 3 now remain. Boat trips to Kastro leave from the harbour daily and it is a highly recomended historic trip.
